How often should you exfoliate your skin? We all have different skin types. Thus you should exfoliate depending on which skin type you belong to. Although this benefits your skin, doing it too often can give you the opposite result you were hoping.

This will be a brief guideline on how often you should exfoliate your skin based on your skin type. Read more to learn more!

Exfoliating Dry And Sensitive Skin

People with dry and sensitive skin would be careful when exfoliating. Harsh products easily irritate the skin causing it to inflame, go red, or increase skin sensitivity.

People with these skin types are only recommended to exfoliate not any more than once or twice a week.

You should use enzymes for exfoliation for sensitive skin. Meanwhile, those who have dry skin should use something that exfoliates and at the same time moisturizes the skin.

Being fully aware of the ingredients of the products you are about to use is essential. This is to avoid skin irritations or other serious skin diseases.

Exfoliating Acne-prone Skin

Acne-prone skin people are allowed to exfoliate up to three times a week – depending on their skin tolerance.

Best to use products that consist of salicylic acid. Therefore, chemical products are the best for this skin type.

To add up, beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) is great in assisting in unclogging pores without affecting the production of natural body oil.

Exfoliating Combination Skin

Combination skin is the best skin type of all. If you have combination skin, then congratulations! You can go exfoliating daily, and you can even switch scrubs, enzymes, and acids.

Despite how lucky you are, it’s always best to consult your dermatologist first before proceeding on a daily exfoliation.

Pay more attention to ingredients such as mandelic acid. This ingredient will help remove any excess oil from the skin but will be mild enough for dry areas, too.

Exfoliating Mature Skin

If you have mature skin, try exfoliating at least twice a week. It should lower skin irritations. You can use either enzymes or glycolic acid products.

Products with alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) is a great all-around exfoliator. It will help reduce skin aging by strengthening the skin foundation.

You can also use any products that reduce wrinkles and pigmentation.

Should You Exfoliate Every Day?

Skin exfoliating removes dirt, unclog pores and eliminates dead skin cells. Also, it will leave your skin smooth and glowing.

But if not suggested or recommended by your dermatologist, do not exfoliate every single day.

Neither chemical nor physical exfoliants are good for a daily skincare routine because too much of either can cause irritations.

Overdoing it may cause extreme skin dryness, inflammation, peeling, and flaking. Some extent, over-exfoliating leads to a sun-sensitive skin and can, later on, develop skin cancer.

On an important note, do not do anything irritating to your skin before you exfoliate. Do not exfoliate when your skin has an open wound, sunburn, or other skin irritations.

Although people have different skin types, I could say that skin exfoliating should not be done every day.

The only exception here is if your dermatologist advises you to do it daily. Also, be careful in using skin exfoliating products to avoid developing other skin issues.
